Please be patient !!!
A number of volunteers have contributed Name Indexes for the 1891 Census for the particular villages linked below. This was originally a project to index the surnames in the complete 1891 census for Norfolk, but that project is no longer running because the Public Record Office is using this census as its pilot for the national 1901 census. The 1891 Norfolk census was available on line from the Public Record Office for a period during 2001, but is no longer available on-line. However, the names indexes to the 1891 Census, prepared by volunteers will continue to be available on this web-site.
The original documents are held by the Public Record Office. Copies on microfilm are available for consultation in the Local Studies section of the Norwich Millenium Library, and elsewhere.
The Norfolk Record Office web-site contains a complete list, for downloading, of their holdings of
Parish Registers & Transcripts; and on each village page of GENUKI-NFK (linked from my pages) you will find a link at the top (Nearby Places) to a page listing villages within 5 miles, with further links for these.
There is general information about the various Norfolk censuses from 1841 to 1891 (and some before 1841) in the GENUKI Census Page. for further information. AND do not ignore the information and advice available on many other pages of the GENUKI-NFK web-site.
Each of the pages linked below gives a Name Index to the 1891 Census of the relevant village, often with the relevant folio and page numbers, to help you to obtain more detailed information. Each page also gives the name of the volunteer who produced the index, together with an e-mail link where that volunteer is prepared to do specific lookups.
But PLEASE NOTE:
If you want to collect general information about any given name then it is up to you to take note of the references given and do your own look-ups.
Remember also that, though the volunteers have extracted the surnames to the best of their ability, census takers' handwriting varies from good to unreadable. There has been no cross-checking, so please send corrections if you find mistakes, and be charitable when what is obvious to you has been
transcribed wrongly. Please be reasonable and considerate in your use of this facility. It is NOT reasonable to expect others to spend any considerable amount of time doing YOUR research for you; though many of us are quite prepared to answer SPECIFIC questions to be best of our ability (such as checking to see whether specific individuals found by you in the 1881 census were also recorded in 1891).
Names occurring in the various villages are also indexed under A-B, C, D-F, G-H, I-M, N-P, Q-S and T-Z.
Full Censuses are available for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891,
[see Census Details (GENUKI-NFK)],
and for particulars of earlier censuses see
Pre 1841 Censuses and Other Names Lists [GENUKI-NFK].
Also note: [Added 22 April, 2003]
You will find, in researching your family, that many spelling variations occurred during the 19th century and before. Surname spelling only began to be standardised after the beginning of national BMD registration in 1837 and was not completed for many years thereafter - spellings were at the whim of whoever wrote out the documentation - as many of the informants were illiterate - and spellings interpret the informant's pronunciation of the surname.
I have found, in one generation of my ancestors the spellings APLIN, APPLIN, APLING and APPLING used in parish registers and census returns - and earlier spellings as APLEN and APPELING..... so in research you must always try to think what other spellings might have be used, or you will miss connections.
Futhermore, remember ancient documents are often very difficult to read as you will as you will find if you look youself at a 19th century Census return or parish register - so that, unless you have an external clue, such as knowing the district or the family, it is all too easy to make mistakes - and although the LDS and others make every effort to get transcriptions correct (very often using two transcribers and checking one against the other) mistakes still occur.
You should never take another person's interpretation as surely correct - all the web-pages and CDs are indexes offering you help, but no one claims they can be error-free.... and it is up to the user to check against the original wherever possible.
